Allison Chew - Her Long Poem

Strangely Fall

Strange little Jackson Blue never liked fall

This time of the year, so strange

Much like himself

He liked things simple, predictable

The fall brought too many surprises

Too much chaos and much too difficult

He loved to play in the yard,

But now his refuge is taken over.

By fallen leaves and scattered branches,

Now off limits

The bugs now come out to play,

And the fallen leaves stick to the pavement

Strange little Jackson just sits as stares

Full of longing for old times

Oh no

Strange little Jackson Blue never liked fall

Such a disappointment

The air was once clear,

And the grass was a perfect green,

He could lie for hours on end

Not a care in the world

He would skip down the street

Water dripping from his brow

Simple times simple minds

Not a clouded thought

Picking flowers

And braiding green chains

Careless dreams led to distant memories

Only looking to the future gave hope

A life of endless summer

Sunny days

And hot nights

Endless summer nights

A future without any hope

Because the seasons always changed

But everyday Little Jackson prayed

That the one day would come

No more worries no cares

Only a few more months

He thought as the leaves continued to fall

A slight glimmer in the distance

Walking down the avenue

Seeing how the sun hides

In the city he has always known

Alone and cold,

He wandered the streets

No one in sight

Strange little Jackson Blue

Never really had a friend

No one to complain with

No one to share with

No one to be with

Instead he wandered

The covered streets

Of the city he had always known

Strange Little Jackson Blue never liked fall

At school he sat alone

Watching the others play

Smiles on their faces

Laughter in their eyes

How could such happiness exist?

At home he had the streets

He wandered

They were always there

There to soak up his sadness

A step beneath his feet

One day strange little Jackson Blue

Was wandering the street

Across the way a strange truck

Was parked outside the abandoned house

New neighbors new faces

Jackson hid in fear

He never liked new things

Especially with all those cold leaves

Scattering the lawn

His mother, the gracious one

Brought over fresh cookies

To welcome the strangers

That’s when she discovered

There was a new little boy

Who had just moved in across the street

His mother, the gracious one

Quickly set up a meet and greet

At the park in the cold

Strange Little Jackson Blue never liked fall

But he went,

His gracious mother insisted

The park was cold,

And the new boy Samuel

Just stared back at him

A break in the silence finally

Samuel asked

“so what do you like to do?”

Strange Jackson shrugged

“I don’t know, wander around I guess”

So they wandered

Steps beneath their feet

In the city that was new and known

The street, once cold and distant

Was now much warmer with

Someone by his side

Suddenly strange Samuel did

The strangest thing

A leaf pile that Jackson normally avoided

Samuel took a giant run and leapt into the pile

Leaves flew, Samuel shrieked

Jackson watched in awe

A sensation of connection came over him

He pounced on the pile

Throwing them in the air

Laughing for the first time

Smiling so hard his cheeks hurt

Samuel jumped up again

Sending shockwaves through Jackson

Finally a friend who could understand

Friends

How strange

Little Jackson Blue never liked fall
