THE CLASS - POETRY BY DESIGN FALL 2011

Nonettes & Trimerics

Brandon Buonacorsi

Anura

I want to be like the warty frog.

One that adapted during life

Who changed as water came

And enveloped his egg

Then morphed a new

Form to behold.

Teach me to

Improve

Frog.

To The One Whom It Concerns: Hannah

She deserves more than a nine line poem.

Our talks mean more than the words told

Because she is my best friend

In this land made of earth.

She brings joy to days

Peace to my heart

And I am

Thrilled I’m

Hers.

Daniela Ponce

THE PARTING

Time passes too quickly

when you least want it to,

you can’t change that

no matter how hard you try

when you least want it to

time is rushing you

to say farewell

you can’t change that

inevitable moment when you hug

and wish each other well

no matter how hard you try

it’s time to say goodbye

to more friends

RECOLLECTIONS

the most important

memories stay with you

while the least important

fade away with time

memories stay with you

and can sometimes torture

as well as heal

while the least important

recollection doesn’t remain

inside your head

fade away with time

memories tend to do

until death takes over

Elizabeth Harrison

The Places I Can Only Visit

It is a long way off

Where I am going

A place that is peaceful and beautiful

I will miss it when I leave

Where I am going

trees surround a small town set between mountains

there is cool water and family to wash away the world

A place that is peaceful and beautiful

It is where I had those moments

It is my childhood I can now only visit

I will miss it when I leave

Just as I miss my new place

When I think that I will leave it too

How Do You Remember

I have a wonderful memory

Some people say

To others it is not so

Not remembering the ones they just held

Some people say

they have a bad memory or good

It all depends on how those memories were filed

To others it is not so

at all

They just throw around their memories hoping they find the right one

Not remembering the ones they just held

Some get neglected because of this or because they were filed wrong

Unkept memories fade and crack and smudge 'til they're distorted from their original, simple beauty

disappearing

if you don't write it down

you won't remember it

if you don't remember it

you won't be thankful for it

if you don't write it down

you may think you've got it, and will remember it,

but just a few hours later, it's--- poof! gone

you won't remember it, you can't

try, go on up the steps of your mind's closet

but it won't be there, it's--- poof! gone

if you don't remember it

you will long for it, miss it, try to find it

oh! oh! almost got it! Nope, that was a fly, i don't, it's--- poof! gone

you won't be thankful for it

because you can't remember it, so always remember:

it's better to write it, write it right now! before it's---

Beloved Castle

by Sabrina Berci

who else will listen to the words we read,

the funny thoughts inside our heads?

who else will take time out of their busy schedule

making out of chaos, on a blog-site legible?

the funny thoughts inside our heads

we shared for just two months and a half

fifteen days in eleven weeks, if we really want to be exact

who else will take time out of their busy schedule

to come up the steps of Olson hall's castle

and read in this fortress, safe place to unravel?

making out of chaos, on a blog-site legible?

yes, that's what he did, our poem-breathing head dragon

and today we climb down with a swift word-filled dagger

Goodbye and thank you

It is time go

To say goodbye

And thanking you for

The knowledge you have shared

To say goodbye

Will be difficult to do

Because you were great

And thanking you for

All that you have done

Will never be enough because

The knowledge you have shared

About all the different poem forms

Have inspired me to continue on

Thoughts

By Marielissa Alvarez Landin

I wonder how the mind works

Do you know why

I don’t understand why

I do what I do when I do

Do you know why

I scratch my head

When I’m confused?

I don’t understand why

It is so hard for me to

Learn something new?

I do what I do when I do

Because I need to know that at

The end of the day I need consistency in my life

Decision

I’m gripping my heart in my fist,

feeling it being crushed into dust.

The train is coming so fast.

If only it wouldn’t stop for me.

Feeling it being crushed into dust

is just the beginning:

my tears fall on it and turn it into paste.

The train is coming so fast!

It will surely blow away everything here,

even the way you angle your head closer to mine.

If only it wouldn’t stop for me,

demanding the choice between boarding

or letting it leave without me.

Life is like this eggshell I’m about to step on and make a mess of

Nicole Schrager

See a thing

watch it happen.

Bam!

It’s there forever.

Watch it happen.

Kinda.

It’s gone forever.

Bam!

Neurons connect.

Life is created.

It’s there forever.

Unless you don’t pay attention.

Did you?

Memory

new things come to life

suddenly everything makes sense

things are romanticized

when memories come to light

suddenly everything makes sense

somehow during it seemed impossible

wish you had this understanding then

things are romanticized

how was everything so perfect then

because it wasn’t

when memories come to light

you regret in one way or another

want to change them or go back

Au revoir

Au revoir my friends

it has been a joy

I will miss you dearly

until we meet again

it has been a joy

listening to your poems

wondering how you became such an artist

I will miss you dearly

as we part

and go our separate ways

until we meet again

and share in our knowledge

of how we have grown

Alyssa Villa

Parting Ways

She loved him

He couldn’t stay

A hug goodbye

One lingering touch on her cheek

He couldn’t stay

His duty called

Off to fight for his love and country

A hug goodbye

Not enough but all that could be had

Saying what was in their hearts

One lingering touch on her cheek

The last until he returned

Should he return

Memory

Study study study

The formulas just don’t seem to stick

Watch a movie once

I know every line

The formulas just don’t seem to stick

I wrack my brain for the information

Test day comes I draw a blank

Watch a movie once

Laugh at funny moments

Store quotable scenes

I know every line

No effort at all

Such useful information, NOT

Saying Goodbye

We all go through life with the love of family and friends,
Even though we know they will all leave us eventually.
Never knowing where the future might lead us,

We say goodbye, hoping to see them again soon.

Even though we know they will all leave us eventually.
We trust that we will reunite,

And everything will seem normal.

Never knowing where the future might lead us,

We wonder if things will truly be the same,

But hope for the best in our friendships and connections.

We say goodbye, hoping to see them again soon,

Not knowing how soon, “soon” really is,

But soon enough, we will see them again.

Memories

We think over and over about our lives,

Try to remember every little detail.

Go over the facts and fine points

That led us to the big picture from our memory.

Try to remember every little detail.

As if they will somehow create something special,

The small details are usually the most special ones.

Go over the facts and fine points,

As if they make up our life stories,

And come together for big moments of our lives.

That led us to the picture of our memory,

Our memory continues to grow and fade,

Each day we learn something and forget something.

Goodbye Is Not Forever

Goodbye, adieu, sayonara.

These words signal departure

like a ship set sail

but goodbye is not forever.

These words signal departure

but just like the sun rises and sets each day,

so too will I see you again one day.

Like a ship set sail

I part with you, and you part with me

saying goodbye,

but goodbye is not forever

it is only the beginning

of a new journey.

Memory

Memory is a strange gadget that begins with

the encoding of information into memory.

Information is maintained in memory by the process of storage,

and we get that information back out by the process of retrieval.

The encoding of information into memory

may not sound that complicated,

but it requires a lot of attention so that

information is maintained in memory by the process of storage,

where it sits there waiting to be called back,

waiting patiently until someone figures out how to retrieve memory

and we get that information back out by the process of retrieval

which, I imagine, is like the turning and cranking

of a century-old screw in a grandfather clock.

Giselle Rodriquez

With Tears

It was time to board the plane

She held on to him tight

With eyes full of tears

He tried smiling

She held on to him tight

Tears running down her face

He tried calming her down

With eyes full of tears

He turned away

Trying to hide it

He tried smiling

And waved goodbye as she boarded the plane

Trying to remind himself this was temporary

- Giselle Rodriguez

Memories

Memories never leave me alone

They bring back the good times

Haunt me with the bad times

And all I do is question what can’t be changed

They remind me of the good times

Like fireworks on the fourth of July

Or my first real kiss

Haunt me with the bad times

Like witnessing arguments late at night

Or my most painful heartbreak

And all I do is question what can’t be changed

Make sure I never forget

And learn from my mistakes

Here is the World

Here is the world

Don’t be afraid

Goodbye is not forever

At home we will meet again

Don’t be afraid

Time is on our side

Moving ever slower apart

Goodbye is not forever

Around our hearts

The world will turn

At home we will meet again

Reaching for the past

Finding it in the future

Memories

A brilliant flash

A blinding light

Memory works too fast

Branded forever

A blinding light

A sudden clash

Forever engrained

Memory works too fast

No time for mistakes

Only silent workings

Branded forever

Only time fades memories

And only time heals scars

Brandon Buonacorsi

The Photo Album

I have a photo album

All compiled in my brain

Are memories of past stories,

Hopes and dreams fulfilled.

All compiled in my brain

Is a collection memory snapshots

Each taken uniquely and with care.

Are memories of past stories

Always good to reflect upon,

Or does the photo blemish with time?

Hopes and dream fulfilled

Evoke a reason to remember,

In order to feel fulfilled again.

No Real Goodbye

Goodbyes have false underlying tones

Every farewell uttered by mankind has

The allusion of a permanent separation

However, eventually we meet again.

Every farewell uttered by mankind has

With it the tone of termination and despair

For departure never appeals to man.

The allusion of a permanent separation

Is that no reunion of two comrades exists

In the brief fog of life man moves through.

However, eventually we meet again

And that fact even death cannot stop,

For man lives for unending relationship

Barbara Bobaparte

Friend Poem

At age 12 twas something that meant best friend

Eight of the longest years of my life

Matching bracelets and pinky swears

Always wanting attention

Silent competition

F in Forever

It came to soon

Want it back

Too late

Gone.

Animal Poem

Giraffe, Giraffe how I love your long stance

Limbs so thin but you stand strong and high

No more than a gentle giant

Harmless and compliant

Your patterns so fine

Caught fashions eye

Dope design

Giraffe

Mine.

My Goodbyes.

I’ve found my outlet

To express how I feel

Poetry by Design

These are my goodbyes

To express how I feel

To express what’s real

Goodbye to friendship

Poetry by Design

I’m no longer in the box

Goodbye to being sheltered

These are my goodbyes

Ill take with me in life

I’ll cherish this outlet.

Memories

The things that matter

The things that stay

Good or Bad

It holds on to the necessary

The things that stay

Have made their way in

And left their imprints

Good or Bad

You have the experience

To withdraw from your memory bank

It holds on to the necessary

To have insufficient funds

Is the brains breakdown.
